J-1 Scholar Extension

Only departments can request extensions of J-1 scholar programs. These requests must be made at least two months before the expiration of the current DS-2019. For some Stanford affiliations, the extension request will be routed to an additional office for approval (e.g., Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, Registrar’s Office, Dean of Research, Medical School Dean’s Office). Bechtel International Center will process the extension once it has received approval from the relevant office.

  • Extensions for J-1 scholars under the Research Scholar category are permitted for up to a maximum period of five years. Many Stanford affiliations, however, are limited in term by institutional policy.
  • J-1 scholars in the Short-Term Scholar category are limited to a six-month stay and may not be extended.

Once the extended DS-2019 has been issued, the department will be notified by email from the Bechtel International Center to pick up the form. J-2 dependents’ DS 2019s will be extended automatically with the extension of the J-1’s DS-2019.

If the J-1 and/or J-2’s entry visa has expired, he/she will need to apply for a new visa stamp if the visitor travels outside of the U.S. and seeks to return to continue the program. Whenever any travel outside the U.S. is planned, please don’t forget that the DS-2019 needs a valid travel signature.
