Assistantships and Fellowships

Main content start

Any awards of financial support (e.g., fellowships providing tuition and stipend, assistantship appointments for teaching or research work) are intended to assist you while they focus on your studies. Therefore, concurrent employment is limited.

Assistantships

As an international student on full assistantships (50% research or teaching appointments, for 20 hours of work per week) you cannot have additional employment.

If you are not enrolled over the summer quarter, you may work more than the 20-hour work week on campus noted above during that quarter. However, Stanford requires that you are enrolled during any quarter in which you hold an assistantship appointment, including the summer quarter. Summer quarter assistantships are therefore limited to 90% FTE (36 hours per week), with concurrent enrollment in at least one unit.

Fellowships

As an international student on full fellowship support, you are limited in your additional work hours. Check Stanford Graduate Fellowships for Stanford's policy.

Individual fellowship sources may have more restrictive rules than those set by Stanford or the immigration service. Check with your department if there are any additional limitations on your particular fellowship.
