Winter Break Travel

We would like to share some important updates regarding the upcoming Winter Break and recent changes to federal immigration policy. We know that this is a time of great uncertainty for international students and scholars. What follows is guidance for your consideration:  

• Recent news reports have indicated that the United States government may move to ban the entry of nationals from countries in addition to those included in the June 4 proclamation, which banned nationals from 12 countries and restricted those from seven others. However, information about which countries may be impacted has not been officially released. If you are currently located in the U.S. and you hold a passport from any of the countries listed in the June 4 proclamation or have related concerns, do not travel outside of the United States without consulting an immigration attorney.
• As a reminder, when traveling domestically, all international students, faculty and staff should carry the following immigration documents during travel: a valid passport, printed/valid 1-20/DS-2019, and printed 1-94 information.
• When traveling internationally, carry a valid passport, valid F-1/J-1 visa stamp (unless you’re a Canadian citizen), printed/valid I-94, EAD card, proof of employment, financial information, and proof of enrollment.
• All international students require a valid travel signature for re-entry in F-1 or J-1 status. If you are planning to travel over break, check the date of your last travel signature on page two of your latest I-20 or page one of the DS-2019. Detailed information is available on the Bechtel website.
• The Stanford Law School Immigrants’ Rights Clinic will be holding a webinar in the new year to discuss immigration developments. • Continue to check your Stanford email regularly over the winter break for additional immigration and travel announcements and updates.

We encourage you to continue assessing your own individual tolerance for risk as you make decisions about international travel over winter break and keep these recommendations in mind:

• If your travel is university-sponsored or organized and you have questions, contact the Stanford Global Risk office by emailing globalrisk@stanford.edu.
