J-1 Scholar Departure

Main content start

When you complete your J-1 Scholar program, you can remain in the U.S. up to 30 days after the program end date on your DS-2019. However, you may not re-enter the U.S. in J status or continue your program activities during this 30-day grace period.

  • If you end your J-1 program more than 15 days before the program end date on your DS-2019 and are not transferring to another U.S. institution, your new end date must be updated by your department and a new DS-2019 processed. You must depart the U.S. no later than 30 days from the last day of your J-1 program. Bechtel advises you to depart the U.S. at least two days before the end of your grace period in case your flight is delayed or cancelled. Overstaying by even one day will have adverse consequences.
  • If you change to another visa classification or acquire a green card prior to the program end date on your DS-2019, ask your department to send an email notification to Bechtel using  internationalscholars@stanford.edu
  • If your J-2 dependent(s) will depart the U.S. before you, you must report it immediately to your department administrator so they can report it quickly to Bechtel International Center who can report the J-2's departure to SEVIS.
